School uniforms make then-vs-now comparisons easy to see. Put two class photos beside each other and the changes appear quickly: cuts, shoes, bags, hairstyles, badges and seasonal layers.
But the comparison is not only visual. Uniforms also point to cost, school rules, suppliers and the expectations placed on learners.
What stays familiar
Even when the details change, many routines stay recognisable. There is still the first-day photo, the missing jersey, the polished shoe and the badge that identifies a school community.
That mix of change and continuity is why school clothing works so well as memory. It belongs to a specific time, but the feeling remains easy to recognise.
