Objects that left without a farewell
Old homes often held objects that seemed permanent at the time: phone books, cassette cleaners, VHS rewinder units, printed calendars, spare remote controls, CD towers, extension cords, photo envelopes and handwritten address books.
Many did not disappear because people disliked them. They disappeared because daily routines moved elsewhere. A phone replaced the calendar, camera, address book, music player, torch and sometimes even the television guide.
Why drawers are archives
A drawer full of outdated objects can be a small archive of family life. It shows what people repaired, saved, reused and expected to need again.
The nostalgia comes from recognition. Seeing an old item reminds people not only of the object, but of the room, shelf or routine attached to it.
